Recently many people have been asking us about SSL certificates. Asking questions like “What is an SSL Certificate?” and “Do I need one?” So today we wanted to explain what they can do and how they can benefit you.
What is an SSL Certificate?
“SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. Typically, SSL is used to secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, and more recently is becoming the norm when securing browsing of social media sites.” – SSL information center
By having an SSL Certificate installed on your server the connection between your computer and the web browser is encrypted. This removes any fear of data being intercepted and copied. On a daily basis we log in and enter credit card details or personal information so it’s nice to know you are covered and the data cannot be read by anyone else.
Do I need an SSL Certificate?
If you are running a standard blog or photo gallery where no sensitive information is being transferred, then no. But hold your horses; Google made an announcement back in August 2014 where they hinted that websites with SSL will benefit from an increase in search engine rankings. Trust us, if Google recommends it then we do it. We aren’t saying its going to be a big bump but every little helps.
If you run an eCommerce site (online shop) or have functionality to login to your website then having an SSL Certificate installed on your server is a must. Not only for security reasons but it gives your customers peace of mind. Many more people are becoming aware of security online, people look for that green padlock in the top corner and without it being there it can be enough for customers to turn away, ultimately leaving you missing out on a sale.
At Designbury we recommend every website has an SSL Certificate. You can never be too careful. If not for security reasons then for helping your site with SEO.
How do I get an SSL Certificate?
Many hosting providers are offering SSL Certificates, which are normally provided on an annual basis for a good price. Some hosting service providers offer it for free. One.com is one of these sites, but you must be hosting with them. Once you’ve accepted the T&C’s your site will be covered.
You may notice a slight change in your URL from http:// to https://. That added ‘S’ stands for secure (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure).
